The ‘World Food Day’ is an important international day celebrated around the world every year on the 16th October. On this day individuals, families and organizations celebrate and acknowledge the importance of
food security in the societies. The coconut industry and its farmers acknowledge and recognize the World Food Day in Papua New Guinea.

For many years, coconut has been a significant crop for food security for Papua New Guineans. The humble coconut is used in numerous ways and as a food supplement in the diets of our people. Coconut is consumed in
various forms including; immature coconut for coconut water and coconut kernel for coconut milk and oil. A remarkable feature of coconut is the amazing nutritional and health benefits that strengthens and supports the
human body.

The modern technological advancements, innovations and lucrative markets had created diversification in the global coconut sector hence various edible by products are produced from tender coconut water, desiccated coconut, coconut milk to virgin coconut oil. Scientific research has proven that virgin coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-aging and anti-bacterial properties. It increases metabolic rates in our system and it is healthy for the skin and the hair. It is proven to provide energy as well as boosting and aiding the human body system. Furthermore, VCO supports healthy thyroid function and improves digestion.

Desiccated coconut is heavily sweetened but contains only 5 grams of sugar. It is commonly used as an ingredient in recipes to add the delicious natural coconut essence, or as an icing, used commonly in baking and as coating to sweeten recipes. Today in the global market, packed coconut water is gaining popularity and is used as an energy drink for athletes.

A few of these coconut by products including desiccated coconut and virgin coconut oil are locally produced and sold by micro small to medium enterprise (MSMEs) at various supermarkets and shops in Wewak, Madang, Lae, Port Moresby, Alotau, Kavieng, Rabaul/Kokopo, Kimbe and Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Coconut continues to maintain food security and enhance the wellness for people who depend on this vital food crop.
