East Sepik Province, is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in coconut cultivation, thanks to the unwavering dedication of Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK). Bolstered by funding from the National Government through the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, KIK is steadfastly advancing its mission to enhance productivity, elevate production, improve product quality, and expand market access for the coconut industry.
KIK’s commitment to fostering collaborative efforts is evident through its continuous engagement with the Provincial Administrations and the districts through the District Development Authorities (DDA), Community Based Organizations, and the private sector. By forging partnerships and alliances, KIK is orchestrating comprehensive coconut development programs across provinces and districts, laying the groundwork for sustainable growth in the sector.
In the picturesque landscape of East Sepik Province, the Coconut Rehabilitation and Replanting program is making remarkable strides. This endeavour encompasses nursery
establishment, widespread distribution of coconut seedlings, coconut replanting activities, farmer training and knowledge dissemination through extension.
At the heart of this revival lies Yaunjange Village in Roma, nestled within the Yamil Tamaui LLG of the Maprik District. Here, a sprawling expanse of nearly 23,000 hectares has been
meticulously earmarked for the cultivation of coconut palms. The current undertaking involves the nurturing of an impressive array of 23,000 coconut seedlings within a well-marked out nursery, where each seedling is being nurtured and ready for transplanting onto their designated plots.
In addition to this, 6000 hectares of land is offered in Gavien, Angoram District and 1050 hectares offered for coconut development in Winge, Yangoru Sausia District. Currently 17,000 seedlings are also in the nursery in Gavien ready for transplanting into the field, while the nursery for Winge is in the planning stage.
Coconut development has also expanded into its West Coast, and Mushu and nearby islands.
The establishment of coconut nurseries and planting of coconuts across ESP indicates a monumental effort to invigorate and expand the coconut industry within the region.
What sets this endeavour apart is the sheer scale of ambition it embodies. The coconut nursery established in Yaunjange Village is a testament to KIK’s dedication and vision. Stretching across the horizon, it proudly stands as Papua New Guinea’s largest coconut nursery, a beacon of hope and progress for the entire nation.
“In launching the replanting program at Yangoru Saussia District, deputy chairman of the KIK Board, Steven Rapheal said, I am proud to express the Board’s wholehearted support for the exceptional work being undertaken by the KIK office in East Sepik and various other provinces across Papua New Guinea. Our commitment resonates with the visionary goals of the Government of Papua New Guinea and KIK, particularly in the realm of agriculture. The strides we are making not only align with our shared vision but also stand as a testament to the dedication and tireless efforts of our teams on the ground in expanding coconut activities in local communities.”

“Our vision reflects our organization’s dedication to uplift and empower the communities involved in coconut cultivation and related industries. It emphasizes sustainable agriculture
practices that not only enhance economic prosperity but also prioritize environmental conservation and social well-being.”
Mr. Alan Aku, Managing Director of KIK, stated, “We are immensely proud of the strides we are making in revitalizing the coconut industry. Our efforts not only in East Sepik Province, but also in East New Britain, West New Britain, Milne Bay, Madang, Morobe, New Ireland, Central and Gulf provinces, with recent inclusions into Manus and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, are a testament to our commitment to sustainable growth, community empowerment, and agricultural excellence.”
“As KIK’s impactful programs continue to unfold, we envisage Yaunjange Village and the East Sepik Province including all other coconut growing provinces are poised to emerge as veritable hubs of coconut cultivation, with an expansion of a coconut boom in the industry in Papua New Guinea.”
East Sepik Deputy Governor, Hon David Kausik says. “The Provincial Government expresses great satisfaction with the efforts of KIK within the province. Witnessing firsthand the extensive work that has been accomplished instils a sense of confidence.”
“The initiatives undertaken by KIK on both the Sepik mainland and on the islands to promote and enhance coconut cultivation in the province signal a promising trajectory for ESP.
“The resurgence of KIK to revitalize copra production and downstream coconut processing within the province is met with enthusiasm. Our commitment to collaborate with your office is steadfast, aimed at fostering the advancement of this industry and ensuring its progressive growth.” said Hon. David Kausik.
