Nursery & Seedlings Distribution
Establishing coconut nurseries and seedling distribution programs is crucial for revitalizing the
coconut industry,
boosting smallholder farmer incomes, and ensuring a sustainable supply chain. These programs address
key challenges such as aging tree populations, low productivity, and limited access to quality
planting materials.
Project
One of the core programs of KIK is nursery & seedling distribution. The government with stakeholders including provincial governments have been investing in this foundational Coconut program primarily for increased production, higher profits and robust future. KIK had been continuously implementing this program in coconut growing provinces throughout the country with impressive outcomes.
Accessibility to Quality Planting Materials:
Improving overall Crop Quality and Yielding Coconuts is dependent on nurseries to constantly supply farmers with reliable access to disease-resistant and high yielding seedlings. For continuity of high yielding coconuts, Initial stock of quality seedlings is vital for a perennial crop like coconut which takes years to bear fruits.
Industry Service Division
Performs the core function of KIK. It specifically provides the technical services in the areas of Export Inspections, License inspections, Economics and Market analysis, Statistical Complication and Dissemination, Copra Quality Training and Project Development.
Economic Growth & Eminent productivity:
A major factor to abundantly increasing yields and income is through using superior seedlings, in-depth knowledge and skills on managing coconut nurseries. KIK with provincial governments throughout the years have been carrying out nursery seedling distribution programs purposely to increase productivity by supplying high yielding palms that will generate more production and income for rural coconut farmers and plantations.
Replanting and Rehabilitation:
Based on surveys numerous coconut palms are senile, which produce less nuts or are aging specifically in the coconut growing provinces. Farming systems and constant supply of new seedlings and replanting are crucial for reorienting current farms for added production, yielding and more profit.
Capacity Building and Skill Development::
Our CDOs carry out training in provinces, schools, non-government organizations, church groups, correctional institutions and youth groups. Equipping them with skills in seed selection, nursery administration and field planting procedures.
Pest and Disease-free seedlings and nurseries:
There is risk of pests and diseases affecting coconuts and abolishing plantations. With knowledge and education from KIK and Bio Security agencies disease free planting material is endorsed by KIK programs to alleviate the hazard of hosting or dispersion of exotic pests and diseases.
Reinforcing the Coconut Value Chain:
Initial foundation of having superior seedling in a managed nursery is a core requirement for a constant supply of coconut productivity, endurance in marketing sales and prolonged profitability,
Risk Mitigation:
Nursery must be in a protected confined environment to safeguard the seedlings and their growth from browsing animals, weed, harsh and weather conditions. A well secured Coconut nursery is significantly preferable compared to direct field planting which is where seedlings are prone to damage.
