By Michael David, Plant Protection Officer
The Mano BCS Quarantine checkpoint operation is situated on the boundary of Raicoast and Usino Bundi District of Madang province. It takes about 45 kilometers away from Madang town. The quarantine checkpoint is a national government funded project through the Department of National Planning and Treasury as part of the medium-term development plan (MTDP) on biosecurity. Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) is a regulatory body for coconut in PNG entrusted by the government to lead and manage the current operation of Mano BCS Quarantine Checkpoint Operation. The operation commenced on the 26th of August 2022. The stakeholders currently involve and participate are Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK), Madang Royal Police Constabulary Unit, and the local youths of Mano community.
The quarantine checkpoint serves to restrict the transfer of plant materials and related host plants from the disease-affected area of Madang province to other regions within Papua New Guinea. Each officer from the government participating stakeholders perform or execute their mandatory role at the quarantine checkpoint. KIK and MPDAL focus on plants and animals whilst police provide security and law enforcement. In addition, police officers check on all motorist passing through checkpoint on arm weapons and other offensive items.
The primary objective of the Mano BCS quarantine checkpoint is to prevent the spread of affected host plants. This is achieved by seizing and destroying any plant materials, particularly coconut or other palm species, that are transported through the checkpoint.
